What is Kitec?
Kitec plumbing consists of flexible aluminum pipe between an inner and outer layer of plastic pipe (PEXpipe). Marketed as a cheaper, corrosion-resistant and easy-to-install alternative to copper piping, Kitec was sold between 1995 and 2007 for potable water, in-floor, and hot-water baseboard heating systems.
It is easy to identify, coloured orange or red for hot water and blue for cold. The Kitec brand name is stamped on the piping itself.
Kitec was installed with brass fittings, as seen in these photos.
If your home or building was built during this period, there is a chance Kitec Piping was installed to deliver your potable water. In condominiums, Kitec was used in the units themselves, not elsewhere in the building.
